Description

Ford is recalling certain model year 2010 fusion, explorer, explorer sport trac, and mercury milan and mountaineer vehicles manufactured between December 15, 2009 through February 3, 2010 equipped with front seat manual recliners. These vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of federal Motor vehicle safety standard no. 202, "head restraint." the recliner gear plate teeth may be out of dimension specification which could result in limited pawl to gear plate tooth engagement.

Safety Risk

In the event of a crash, the seatback and head restraint may move rearward, increasing the risk of injury.

Remedy

Dealers will replace the manual recliners for both power and manual seats free of charge. The safety recall is expected to begin on or before April 30, 2010. Owners may contact Ford at 1-866-436-7332.

Gross vehicle weight rating - gvwr, and 2002 and 2003 Lincoln blackwood vehicles manufactured from June 20, 1995, through August 4, 2004, originally sold, or currently registered in, connecticut, delaware, illinois, indiana, iowa, kentucky, maine, maryland, massachusetts, michigan, minnesota, missouri, new hampshire, new jersey, new york, ohio, pennsylvania, rhode island, vermont, west virginia, wisconsin, and the district of columbia. Prolonged exposure to road deicing chemicals may cause severe corrosion of the fuel tank straps which secure the tank to the vehicle.

Safety Risk

As a result of the corrosion, one or both straps may fail allowing the fuel lines to separate from the tank, or in some cases, causing the tank to contact the ground. Either scenario may result in a fuel leak presenting a fire hazard.

Remedy

Ford Motor Company has authorized your dealer to install either new fuel tank straps or a new fuel tank strap reinforcement kit. Both include additional corrosion protection and are provided free of charge parts and labor.

Should the customer be able to latch the door, there is a potential that the door may unlatch while driving. Ford is aware of two allegations of injury (soreness) resulting from an unlatched door bouncing back when the customer attempted to close it, and one accident allegation when an unlatched door swung open and struck the adjacent vehicle while the driver was pulling into a parking space.

This may result in the steering gear Motor becoming loose or detaching from the gear housing, although the steering gear Motor will not separate from the vehicle. Ford is not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries related to this condition.

Safety Risk

Steering gear Motor detachment from the gear housing would result in a loss of power steering assist, but would not result in steering loss or separation of the Motor from the vehicle. The mechanical linkage between the steering wheel and the road is maintained at all times. The steering system will default to manual steering mode, allowing the vehicle to be steered in a safe and controlled manner. The amount of assist supplied is inversely proportional to vehicle speed, with the highest levels of assist provided at lower vehicle speeds. Loss of power steering assist would require higher steering effort, especially at lower speeds, which may result in an increased risk of a crash.

Remedy

Ford Motor Company has authorized your dealer to inspect the steering gear Motor attachment bolts and replace the steering gear assembly if any bolts are missing or broken.

1. Dealerships will analyze diagnostic trouble codes dtcs and perform a leak test on the canister purge valve cpv. Cpvs will be replaced as necessary. 2. The fuel tank will be inspected for cracks, and will be replaced as necessary. 3. The vehicle powertrain control modules will be reflashed with new software strategy. Ford provided the general reimbursement plan for the cost of remedies paid for by vehicle owners prior to notification of a safety recall in February 2015. The ending date for reimbursement eligibility is January 31, 2016.
