Description
A door latch with a broken pawl spring tab typically results in a "door will not close" condition. Should the customer be able to latch the door, there is a potential that the door may unlatch while driving. Ford is aware of two allegations of injury (soreness) resulting from an unlatched door bouncing back when the customer attempted to close it, and one accident allegation when an unlatched door swung open and struck the adjacent vehicle while the driver was pulling into a parking space.

Description
On affected manual transmission vehicles, the rear hatchback (back door) can be unlocked and unlatched with a single press of the interior latch release control button when the vehicle speed is less than 7 kph (4 mph). The interior latch release control button is located on the left side of the steering column. Fmvss 206, section 4.3.2 requires two separate actions to unlock the door and operate the interior latch release control mechanism. Ford is not aware of any reports of accident or injury related to this condition.
Safety Risk
If a driver actuates the interior latch release control button with a single push and the vehicle speed is less than 7 kph (4 mph), the back door will unlock and unlatch, potentially increasing the risk of injury for unrestrained occupants while the vehicle is moving.
Remedy
Ford Motor Company has authorized your dealer to reprogram your body control module free of charge parts and labor.
