Description
Vehicles that are operated in high-corrosion environments associated with exposure to road salt may experience corrosion of the steering gear Motor attachment bolts. This may result in the steering gear Motor becoming loose or detaching from the gear housing, although the steering gear Motor will not separate from the vehicle. Ford is not aware of any reports of accidents or injuries related to this condition.
Safety Risk
Steering gear Motor detachment from the gear housing would result in a loss of power steering assist, but would not result in steering loss or separation of the Motor from the vehicle. The mechanical linkage between the steering wheel and the road is maintained at all times. The steering system will default to manual steering mode, allowing the vehicle to be steered in a safe and controlled manner. The amount of assist supplied is inversely proportional to vehicle speed, with the highest levels of assist provided at lower vehicle speeds. Loss of power steering assist would require higher steering effort, especially at lower speeds, which may result in an increased risk of a crash.
Remedy
Ford Motor Company has authorized your dealer to inspect the steering gear Motor attachment bolts and replace the steering gear assembly if any bolts are missing or broken.
Next Steps

Description
When operated in environments associated with road salt use, one or more of the three steering gear Motor bolts may fracture due to corrosion.
Safety Risk
This may result in a loss of power steering assist requiring a greater steering effort, especially at lower speeds, and increase the risk of a crash. The mechanical linkage between the steering wheel and the road is maintained at all times. The steering system will default to manual steering mode.
Remedy
Ford Motor Company has authorized your dealer to remove the original steering gear Motor bolts, install revised bolts, and apply corrosion inhibitor to specified areas of the steering gear. If any of the original steering gear Motor bolts are broken, missing or break during removal, dealers will replace the steering gear assembly. All services will be performed free of charge (parts and labor).

On your vehicle, it may be possible the transmission shifter cable bushing is damaged or missing.
Safety Risk
A damaged or missing bushing could prevent the shifter from moving the transmission into the intended gear position and cause the vehicle to move in an unexpected direction. The transmission may not be in the park position, even though the shifter position indicates that the vehicle was shifted to park. Exiting a vehicle without the transmission in the park position and without the application of the parking brake may allow the vehicle to roll, increasing the risk of injury or crash.
Remedy
Parts are now available to repair your vehicle. Ford Motor Company has authorized your dealer to replace the shifter cable bushing and protective cap free of charge parts and labor.
