Why is tire pressure critical in my Ford?
Proper tire pressure is critical for even tread wear to optimize your vehicle's performance and handling. Low tire pressure can cause unnecessary wear on your tires and may be an indicator that you need new tires. Find your vehicle's tire information, including tire pressure, on a placard located in your driver’s side doorframe.
Checking Tire Pressure
You can check your tire pressure easily with a digital or standard manual stick-type tire pressure gauge. Simply remove the tire valve cap from the valve stem. Then place the tire pressure gauge on top of the tire valve stem, pressing down until you no longer hear the sound of air hissing out of the tire. This indicates that the tire gauge is engaged. A digital gauge will provide the air pressure on the screen, and a standard gauge will indicate the tire pressure in units that are etched on a bar that pushes out from the bottom of the gauge.
Note: If your vehicle is equipped with FordPass® Connect*, you can also check your tire pressure using the FordPass® App**.
Frequency for Checking Tire Pressure
You should check your tire pressure every month, especially as temperature changes. Tires should be inflated to the pressure per square inch (PSI) rating listed in the driver’s side door frame. Ideally, you should check your tires when the tires are cold, meaning when your vehicle has not been driven for at least 3 hours because warm tires can have extra pressure.
You should check your tires if the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) light comes on, you hit a pothole, or notice increased vibration or reduced traction, braking or handling. A sudden loss in tire pressure could indicate that you need new tires or that you may need tire service.
Your Ford Dealers have factory-trained technicians who are ready to help check and diagnose your tire pressure issues.
