Recall Reference Number: 25S76

Building vehicles you can count on is one of our most important jobs, which is why Ford has issued a safety recall on certain 858,000 2021-2024 Bronco Sport® SUV and 2020-2022 Escape® SUV models.

This recall expands and replaces previous recalls and will include a new remedy for this concern, which is currently under development. As an interim remedy, dealers will update the engine control software, free of charge, which will help detect cracked injectors and mitigate the fire risk. Vehicles previously remedied under the prior recalls will need to have the new final remedy performed once it is available. Ford encourages customers who don’t already have the interim software update to contact their dealer to schedule an appointment. Complimentary pick-up and delivery may be provided at participating Ford Dealers/Lincoln Retailers. This is especially important as the safety risk here is that a fuel injector may crack and leak fuel inside the engine compartment. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source, such as hot engine or exhaust components, can increase the risk of a fire.

For questions or concerns about the 2021-2024 Bronco Sport® SUV and 2020-2022 Escape® SUV safety recall 25S76, please call us at 1-866-436-7332. A Ford recall team member will be happy to assist you.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the issue tied to this safety recall?

Ford is recalling approximately 858,000 2021–2024 Bronco Sport and 2020–2022 Escape vehicles with 1.5-liter gasoline turbocharged direct injection engines, due to an underhood fire risk from fuel leaks caused by cracked fuel injectors. This safety recall expands and replaces previous safety recalls related to cracked fuel injectors and will include a new remedy for this issue, which is currently under development. It will also include an interim software update to help detect cracked injectors and mitigate fire risk. Additional vehicles produced with these injectors that were not previously recalled are also now included. Drivers may notice a fuel odor (both inside and outside the vehicle), instrument cluster warnings, or smoke and flames from the engine compartment or underbody. An underhood fire increases the risk of injury. Ford is aware of underhood fire incidents related to this condition. We are not aware of any injuries associated with underhood fires related to cracked fuel injectors.

Haven’t you already recalled vehicles for this same issue?

Ford has issued prior recalls to address the risk of underhood fire due to fuel leaks from cracked fuel injectors in Escape® SUV and Bronco Sport® SUV vehicles with 1.5-liter gasoline turbocharged direct injection four-cylinder engines. Ford’s prior remedy addressed the risk of underhood fire through an update to the engine control software, which allowed for detection of a cracked fuel injector and invoked a strategy to disable the high-pressure fuel pump, derate engine power output, and reduce temperatures of possible ignition sources in the engine compartment. The remedy also included installation of a tube for additional robustness to allow fuel to drain from the cylinder head drain hole, away from surfaces that may initiate combustion. The prior remedy did not prevent injectors from cracking and Ford has determined the need for a new final remedy. Ford is developing a new remedy to fully address this concern.

What is happening with Ford quality? Why are there so many recalls?

Ford has significantly improved product quality and is the most awarded brand in the recent J.D. Power 2025 U.S. Initial Quality Study, with four Ford vehicles topping their segments. Data also shows we are among the best-in-class in quality at launch.

The increase in recalls reflects our desire to go the extra mile to protect customers by finding and fixing any hardware and software issues. Ford has more than doubled our team of safety and technical experts in the past two years and significantly increased testing to failure on critical systems such as powertrains, steering, and braking.

We can and do find issues that exist on earlier model years, including ones that have not even been reported. Ford will not compromise our responsibility to provide the same standard of excellence to all our customers, not just those buying new vehicles.

We believe this approach will lead to systemic and lasting positive change and help us reach world-class levels for quality, safety, and customer satisfaction.

Does this mean every vehicle in the prior recalls for this issue is being recalled again?

Yes. Vehicles previously remedied under the prior recalls will need to have the new final remedy performed once it is available.

Why haven’t the earlier recalls solved the issue? Why the need for another recall?

The prior recall remedies do not prevent fuel injectors from cracking and leaking fuel. Ford is developing a new remedy to fully address this concern.

How soon until a permanent fix is available?

A new replacement remedy for this issue is currently under development. We hope to share more information soon.
