What Additives and Flushes Should I Use for My Vehicle?
Fluids and Additives
Ford recommends the use of only Ford/Motorcraft® branded or equivalent products meeting the Engineering Specifications as stated in your Owner's and Workshop Manuals. Ford does not recommend the use of aftermarket additives unless they meet explicitly defined Ford Specifications and their use is to address a specific concern identified by Ford. Ford/Motorcraft chemicals and other aftermarket brand chemicals meeting Ford Engineering Specifications are carefully balanced formulations consisting of several components optimized to provide the best performance. While Ford does not test all aftermarket additives, Ford does not believe the use of aftermarket additives will improve the performance of its systems.
Flushes
Ford endorses the use of flushing when part of repairs that are required due to failures in a system. It is important that failed/oxidized fluids, which may have wear particles or other contaminants entrained in them, be removed from the affected system before the new service fluid is added and the repair is concluded. However, flushing should only be done using the same fluid required to finish the repair or maintenance procedure. Cooling systems may be flushed with pure water; a 50/50 mix of coolant and water is not required. A non-acid type flush chemical meeting Ford specifications may be used. Approved Cooling System Additives may be used on heavy-duty diesel systems between coolant changeouts. Approved System Flushing Solvents should be used when repairing air conditioner systems. Flushing in conjunction with transmission repairs may require the replacement of the transmission cooler or the addition of an in-line filter. At no time should an aftermarket additive, flushing agent, or chemical be used as part of a system flushing procedure unless recommended and approved by Ford.
Warranty
In general, maintenance procedures (including the use of aftermarket additives) that are not performed in compliance with recommended manufacturer specifications do not automatically void the Ford Motor Company's new vehicle limited warranty. Each warranty claim is reviewed on its own merit. However, if the use of a product that does not meet Ford specifications or is not used according to Ford procedures causes or contributes to the failure of a Ford component, the cost of repairing the affected component will not be covered by the Ford Motor Company new vehicle limited warranty.
