Why does the steering wheel sometimes feel like it is pulling on its own while driving my Ford?
If your vehicle is equipped with the Lane-Keeping System*, you may experience some resistance from the steering wheel to maintain your vehicle's position within its lane. This system is designed to help prevent unintentional lane departure by detecting lane markings using a forward-facing camera.
The Lane-Keeping System operates in several configurable modes:
- Aid: In this mode, the system applies gentle steering torque to help guide your vehicle back toward the center of the lane if it detects an unintentional drift without a turn signal being activated.
- Alert: This mode warns you of an unintentional lane departure through a steering wheel vibration, which simulates driving over a rumble strip, or an audible alert.
- Aid + Alert (Both): This mode combines both the steering assistance and the warning alert.
Turning Lane-Keeping System Off and On
To activate or deactivate the Lane-Keeping System, you will typically find a dedicated button located on the end of the left-hand turn signal stalk or on the steering wheel, depending on your vehicle's model and year.
Note: The system generally remembers your last selected setting (on or off) for future ignition cycles, unless a MyKey is detected, in which case it may default to On with Alert mode selected.
