Helpful Insights for First-Time Buyers

The first time buying a vehicle is less scary with the right people behind you. We’ve collected some tips to guide you through the buying process so you can feel ready when you visit the dealership.

Decide between a new and used vehicle.

When choosing between a new or used vehicle, it’s important to look beyond the price and consider the total cost of ownership. New vehicles may offer warranty coverage and lower maintenance costs early on. Used vehicles may cost less upfront but need more repairs over time.

Make sure to also compare costs like insurance, maintenance, and monthly payments. You should also consider personal essentials like safety features, cargo space, and technology. This will help you get a clearer picture of all your potential direct and indirect costs before deciding.

Determine the right price range for your budget.

Start by figuring out what you're comfortable spending on your vehicle each month. Consider regular expenses like insurance, fuel or charging costs, maintenance, and registration.

Once you have a budget in mind, use our payment calculator to estimate your monthly payment. It will also show how current offers and incentives may apply to the vehicle you're interested in.

Prequalify for financing.

With your needs and budget established, you can get prequalified to see an estimate of how much you can afford. It has zero impact on your credit score!

Prequalifying can help first-time buyers:

  • Compare vehicles within a realistic price range

  • Shop with more confidence before visiting a dealership

  • Save time during the financing process

Prepare for your dealership visit.

Before visiting the dealership, gather the documents you'll need. This includes your driver’s license, proof of insurance and income, and any financing or trade-in information.
