Can I drive my Ford while it is updating?

Some SYNC®* and software updates can be completed while your vehicle is being driven while others require your vehicle to be off.

Updating Your Vehicle

Select your SYNC generation from the drop-down options below to learn if you can drive while your vehicle updates.

Note: If you need assistance determining the generation of your SYNC system, select the first drop-down option.

Identifying Your Ford's SYNC Generation

Two resources to help you identify your vehicle's SYNC generation are the:

  • SYNC and Navigation Updates page. Either:
    • Enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and select Check for update.
    • Log in with your Ford credentials, choose a vehicle from your garage, and select Check for updates.

Note: Your SYNC generation will appear on the right-hand side of the page.

  • SYNC Visual Reference Guide, which provides example images of SYNC generations that Ford has offered.

Select your SYNC generation from the drop-down options below to learn how to modify your SYNC connectivity settings.

Software Updates - SYNC 4A and SYNC 4

  • Some updates will happen seamlessly in the background while you are driving.
  • Non-drivable updates require your vehicle to be turned off while updating. Most complete within minutes, while others may take longer**. You should schedule the update to occur when you do not need to drive your vehicle, such as overnight.

SYNC Updates - SYNC 3 and Previous Generations of SYNC

Wi-Fi (SYNC 3 required)

You can drive and use SYNC during the update.

Flash Drive (SYNC 3 and Previous Generations of SYNC)

Your vehicle must be in Park (p) when you initiate the SYNC update installation process. Make sure your vehicle is in a well-ventilated area as your vehicle must remain running until the update is complete. Once the download process starts, you may drive your vehicle.
