Why is the voice recognition not working after performing a SYNC®* 3 update?

If your SYNC 3 voice commands stop functioning after performing an update, it is possible that the update may have failed even though it appears successful.

If you experience any issues, follow the troubleshooting process below.

Identifying Your Ford's SYNC Generation

These are two resources to help you identify your vehicle's SYNC generation:

  • SYNC and Navigation Updates page, which allows you to enter your Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) or log in with your Ford credentials, and select Check for update. Your current SYNC generation will appear on the right-hand side of the page.

  • SYNC Visual Reference Guide, which has example images of each generation of SYNC Ford has offered.

Troubleshooting Steps

  1. Perform a master reset, and let it finish completely.

Important: A SYNC Master Reset returns the system to its factory default settings. You will need to pair your phone again and restore any previously selected settings.

  2. Perform a key cycle by going through the following sequence:

    1. Turn the vehicle off.

    2. Open the door.

    3. Exit the vehicle.

    4. Lock the vehicle.

    5. Shut the door.

    6. Step away from your vehicle for 2 minutes.

  3. Re-enter and restart the vehicle.

  4. Wait for the Home screen to show.

  5. Insert the USB drive, also known as a flash or thumb drive, that contains the update and start the update again.

If the above steps do not resolve the issue, contact your Ford Dealer for assistance.
