How to Set Up Ford Phone As A Key

Phone As A Key* is a virtual key that allows you to drive your vehicle with only your smartphone with you. It’s an alternative to the traditional key fob for your Ford Mustang Mach-E and uses a Bluetooth® connection from your smartphone that lets you lock/unlock doors, control the liftgate and remotely start or stop your vehicle. You can create up to four virtual keys on four separate users’ phones, however, the tech requires activation of FordPass™ Connect** and a FordPass App account.

Step 1: Activate FordPass Connect

  1. Make sure you have your phone and Ford Mustang Mach-E key fob
  2. Park your vehicle in an open area with a good cellular connection for your phone and start the vehicle using the power button, remain in park (e.g., connection can be compromised in some parking garages)
  3. Download the FordPass App on the App Store® or Google Play™ (If you already have a FordPass account, skip to next step)
  4. Log in to your existing account or create a new account
  5. Add your vehicle to the FordPass App garage
  6. Click “Activate Vehicle”; this will activate your modem (this prompt may take a few minutes to show up on the app)
  7. Enable connectivity settings using your SYNC® Technology† screen. Tap on the Mustang Mach-E in the upper left corner. Then tap the Settings tab. Then tap Connectivity and toggle on Vehicle Data, Vehicle Location, Driving Data, Vehicle Analytics

If you’re an iPhone® owner, be sure to check your Privacy Settings in the FordPass App to ensure Location Access is set to Always. Otherwise, you will have to manually open the FordPass App every time you want to use Phone As A Key.

Step 2: Activate Phone As A Key

  • Ensure your phone is compatible and is running iOS 13 or newer or Android OS 8 or newer and Bluetooth 4.2 or newer
  • Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on your phone
  • Tap Home in the FordPass App
  • Tap “Setup Phone As A Key” in the FordPass App
  • Click on Set Up Now
  • Follow the prompts in the FordPass App

Step 3: Create a Backup Start Passcode and Keyless Entry Door Code

With a Backup Start Passcode and Keyless Entry Door Code, you can enter and drive the vehicle without a key fob or a Phone As A Key (you do need your key fob and phone to set up at the beginning and must have Phone As A Key to program Backup Start Passcode).

  1. If you have an iPhone, check your Privacy Settings in the FordPass App to ensure Location Access is set to Always
  2. Ensure you have Phone As A Key set up on your phone (see above)
  3. Press Yes on the “Backup Start Passcode” message that appears on your vehicle’s SYNC screen
  4. Follow the prompts on your SYNC touchscreen and enter your desired passcode, confirm the passcode (needs to be at least 6 characters of letters, numbers and special characters in NA and 10 characters if all numbers, e.g., #Ford1 or 2569013473)
  5. Press Enter/Return on the screen keyboard after completing the confirmation password
  6. Create a new personal door keyless entry code or use an existing one (optional) by following the prompts (five numbers required)

Note: If a backup passcode has not been set within five starts, you can go to Vehicle Settings/Setup to create a Backup Start Passcode

How to Reset Phone As A Key

If the Phone As A Key belongs to your account, you can delete it from your phone. If not, perform a Phone As A Key reset by following the steps below to remove all previous settings, including your Backup Start Passcode:

  1. Press Settings on your vehicle’s SYNC touchscreen
  2. Press General
  3. Press Reset
  4. Press the FordPass Connect Reset option
  5. Press Phone As A Key Reset
  6. Confirm that you would like to continue with erasing all Phone As A Key and Backup Start Passcodes
  7. Press Continue

Note: If you reset Phone As A Key, you will need to select a new Backup Start Passcode. Limitations to Phone As A Key vary based on the make and model of your phone, phone location and physical obstructions.

The following could hurt or prevent Phone As A Key performance:

  • Your smartphone is not using the latest software of iOS 13 or newer or Android OS 8 or newer and Bluetooth 4.2 or newer (some devices below this requirement may partially work or not work at all)
  • You’re out of range. Typical operating range is 40 m (131 feet)
  • Your Bluetooth connection is not enabled, is disrupted or is out of range
  • Your Phone As A Key is not active or enabled on at least one phone
  • Your vehicle battery has depleted
  • There is interference from other devices using radio frequencies
  • Your phone is too close to other metal objects or devices
  • The FordPass App is closed

Additional Tips for Using Phone As A Key:

  • Your Mustang Mach-E needs to be able to detect your Phone As A Key in order to unlock the doors and must be able to find your phone clearly within the interior of the vehicle to drive
  • When in the vehicle, it’s recommended that you move your phone toward the center of the interior
  • Keep in mind that thick or bulky smartphone cases can interfere with the Bluetooth connection. Your signal can be delayed or may not be available at all if there are bulky items between your phone and the vehicle (e.g., phone is in a briefcase between folders, in a bag sandwiched between a laptop and a legal pad or in a back pants pocket close to the seat back)
  • To get the fastest response with Phone As A Key, it’s recommended that you leave your FordPass App open. If closed, the app will relaunch when it detects your vehicle, but will take a moment to reestablish the connection, therefore, delaying response time
