OUR NEWEST POWERTRAIN INNOVATIONUnlike traditional camshafts, whose timing is fixed during manufacturing, twin independent variable camshaft timing (Ti-VCT) technology can be slightly rotated, allowing timing of each camshaft to be "advanced" or "retarded." This adds an extra measure of precision, contributing to fuel efficiency or power output, as conditions demand. The electronic control module gives each intake and exhaust camshaft the ability to adjust independently of the other; traditional VCT engines operate only on the intake cam. Ti-VCT technology also improves fuel efficiency at all engine speeds: on Mustang, it delivers an amazing 31 mpg highway, the best fuel economy in its class (Class is V6 Sports Car vs. 2011 competitors). |

EcoBoost™ TECHNOLOGYIt's a simple fact: Even with advancements in technology, the majority of vehicles worldwide will be gasoline-powered. Ford EcoBoost™ gas-turbo direct-injection engines can help provide better fuel efficiency without sacrificing power that drivers want. Energy from the engine's exhaust – that would otherwise be wasted – is used to rotate a turbine wheel. Each turbine is coupled to a compressor that pressurizes the incoming air, significantly increasing the output per liter. The EcoBoost provides the performance of a V8 with the fuel-economy of a six-cylinder engine. |

IN THE NEAR FUTUREInstead of a gasoline engine, Ford all-electric vehicles will have an electric motor and high-voltage lithium-ion battery. They will run purely on electricity and are targeted to go up to 100 miles on a single charge. Because electricity is often cheaper than gasoline, they may be less costly to operate, especially if the battery is charged at night when electric rates are lower. All-electric vehicles will also feature a Regenerative Braking System, which will enable them to capture braking energy and store it for later use. Coming spring 2012, watch for the Focus Electric, which will be the first consumer-available all-electric model from Ford. |
