22S73: Bronco Sport (2021-2023) and Escape (2020-2022) Fuel Injector Recall

The fuel injector may crack, and gasoline and fuel vapor may migrate and accumulate near ignition sources. This can cause an underhood fire.

The cause is still under investigation, but the source is a cracked engine fuel injector. When the injector cracks, gasoline may leak down onto hot surfaces and potentially cause a fire.

To complete the recall repair, your Ford Dealership will update the engine control software and install a drain tube. The updated software detects a pressure drop in the fuel rail and will provide a dashboard message instructing customers to seek service if the pressure drops. This update will also automatically reduce engine power if a pressure drop is detected. This minimizes the risk of fire and gives drivers time to find a safe location, stop the vehicle and call for service. The drain tube drains fuel from the cylinder head and away from hot surfaces.

In addition, if a fuel injector has a leak in the next 15 years or 150,000 miles from the warranty start date (whichever occurs first), Ford will replace the fuel injectors free of charge (parts and labor).

While monitoring for underhood fire reports related to recall 22S21 (NHTSA Recall No. 22V-191), Ford reviewed two underhood fire reports involving a 2022 Escape and 2022 Bronco Sport. Ford found the reports inconclusive, but it raised the concern there may be an additional contributing cause for these underhood fires. Ford began investigating additional reports on 2020—2022 Bronco Sport and Escape SUVs. Based on analysis from the Ford Engineering team, the company determined a cracked fuel injector is the cause of the potential fire risk.
