      Seven Decades on the Beat

      Ford introduced the company’s first purpose-built police package in 1950, kicking off more than 70 years of working with law enforcement customers, and that dedication continues today. Every vehicle is designed with what we call the Ford Police DNA – officer safety, durability, performance, purpose-built and upfit friendly.

      • 1950

        Ford becomes the first manufacturer to offer a Police Package vehicle. The focus then, as it is now, was on safety, durability, performance and the attributes of being purpose built and upfit friendly. 

      • 1951

        First official use of the Ford “Interceptor” name on the optional 110-hp flathead V8 engine.

      • 1954

        The new Ford “Y-block” Interceptor V8 engine is rated at 160 hp.

      • 1958

        The police-exclusive 303-hp “361 Special V8 Police Interceptor” becomes part of a 6-engine, 4-transmission lineup.

      • 1961

        Ford Division study finds 58 percent of police vehicles in use in the 50 largest cities in the U.S. are Ford models.

      • 1964

        A new emphasis is placed on “total performance” – achieving the best overall benchmarks in driving dynamics, such as acceleration, braking and cornering. 

      • 1967

        The first Ford sport utility vehicle for law enforcement use is introduced – as well as the first 4x4 – with the launch of the Ford Bronco Special Purpose Vehicle.

      • 1973

        The heavy-duty Cruise-O-Matic automatic transmission becomes standard on all Ford police cars.

      • 1982

        Mustang patrol model introduced. California Highway Patrol purchases 400.

      • 1983

        The full-size Ford sedan is now named the “LTD Crown Victoria”. Police Package vehicles can be ordered with an optional 351 cubic inch 5.8L HO V8.

      • 1993

        As a prelude to the Police Interceptor®Utility, the Ford Explorer is first offered with a special service package for law enforcement.

      • 1998

        Ford Police Interceptors are the preferred choice of municipalities, dominating the sales of all police pursuit vehicles in the U.S. and Canada.

      • 2002

        Ford is the first manufacturer to offer factory-installed ballistic door panels, mounted inside the door.

      • 2003

        The Crown Victoria Police Interceptor is the first vehicle worldwide tested to meet the 75-MPH rear-impact crash test. Today’s Ford Police Interceptors remain the only vehicles in the world tested to this demanding standard. 

      • 2012

        The Crown Victoria Police Interceptor is retired from service, as Ford introduces the next-generation Police Interceptors – offering power and performance with V6 engines and standard full-time Intelligent all-wheel drive. 

      • 2013

        Ford adds the mighty 3.5L EcoBoost® to the Police Interceptor lineup, which outperforms V8-powered offerings from other manufacturers in independent testing by the Michigan State Police and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

      • 2015

        Ford produces its 100,000th next-generation Police Interceptor – the new Police Interceptor Utility.

      • 2016

        Ford is the first manufacturer to offer Level IV+ ballistic panels, mounted inside the door, rated to protect against armor-piercing rounds.

      • 2017

        Ford reveals the first-ever pursuit-rated Hybrid, the Police Responder Hybrid Sedan, and the first-ever pursuit-rated pickup truck, the F-150 Police Responder.

      • 2017

        Ford Police Interceptor Sedan and Utility continue to be America’s best-selling police vehicles.

      • 2018

        Ford reveals the 2020 Police Interceptor Utility, with standard hybrid and full-time Intelligent all-wheel drive. In independent testing by the Michigan State Police and the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the 3.0L EcoBoost outperforms all other vehicles, including V8-powered sedans. Meanwhile, the hybrid outperforms the remaining utility vehicles, including V8-powered utilities.

      • 2021

        To demonstrate that a vehicle with an electric powertrain can deliver strong performance and stand up to demanding police duty cycles, Ford submitted an all-electric Mustang Mach-E®️ police pilot vehicle for testing as part of the Michigan State Police 2022 Model Year Police Evaluation. Helping to pave the way for electronic police vehicle lineups throughout the U.S.

        The Ford F-150® Lightning® Pro Special Service Vehicle was introduced to provide the modern, always-on work-ready truck police departments need to help achieve sustainability goals. It combines the benefits of an electric powertrain with law enforcement-specific interior features like police-grade heavy-duty cloth seats, built-in steel intrusion plates and available roof-mounted LED warning beacons.
