  • Q.
The Focus Electric has no spare tire. What if I get a flat?
  • A.
Focus Electric comes standard with a Tire Mobility Kit that consists of a sealing compound in a canister that will effectively seal most punctures caused by nails or similar objects, along with an air compressor to reinflate the tire. This kit will provide a temporary seal that will allow you to drive up to 120 miles at a max speed of 50 mph.
  • Q.
How is the Focus Electric different than the Toyota Prius (or a typical hybrid)?
  • A.
The Focus Electric is an all-electric vehicle, meaning there is no gas engine that kicks in to supply additional power, as employed in typical hybrid vehicles. All the power for the Focus Electric is supplied by the lithium-ion battery system and electric motor. No gas or oil changes ever.
  • Q.
What company is supplying the laminated lithium-ion batteries?
  • A.
Compact Power, Inc. (CPI), based in Troy, MI, is the supplier of the lithium-ion battery packs.
  • Q.
Where will the Focus Electric be built?
  • A.
The Focus Electric will be built at the Michigan Assembly Plant in Wayne, Michigan, alongside the gas-powered Focus.
  • Q.
Will the Focus Electric be available with automatic or manual transmission?
  • A.
Focus Electric features a standard, single-speed automatic transmission designed specifically to handle the high rpm range of an electric motor.
  • Q.
Can you confirm if this vehicle will have cruise control?
  • A.
Yes, cruise control is standard on the Focus Electric.
  • Q.
Where are the batteries located? Will they take up a lot of the hatch space?
  • A.
The Focus Electric battery pack is located at the rear of the vehicle, under the rear passenger seat and extends into the cargo area. While the battery does take up a portion of the cargo area, the Focus Electric comes standard with a unique Cargo Management System to help make the most of the space available.

  • Q.
Is it true that the Focus Electric has no fluids like coolant, transmission, steering, brake…?
  • A.
This is not entirely true. Focus Electric does use some fluids, including a coolant in the liquid heated and cooled battery system, brake fluid, and windshield wiper fluid. However, the Focus Electric will never require an oil change, and most importantly, uses absolutely no gasoline.
  • Q.
What is the Electric driving range?
  • A.
The 2012 Ford Focus Electric is projected to be the first five-passenger all-electric vehicle with a combined fuel efficiency rating of over 100 MPGe.*

*Estimate based on EPA ZEV Certification Testing.
  • Q.
    How does regenerative braking work?
  • A.
During braking in Focus Electric, the electric motor temporarily acts as a generator and is able to capture over 90 percent of the energy normally lost as heat, using it to recharge the battery. The Focus Electric also features a Brake Coach in the instrument cluster that will display the percentage of energy captured by the regenerative braking system after each full stop.
  • Q.
Can I alter my driving habits to improve EV range?
  • A.
Yes. Just like in a conventional gas-powered vehicle, driving behavior has an effect on efficiency. To help maximize your range, accelerate slowly, drive at a steady, moderate speed and avoid quick/hard braking. The Focus Electric includes numerous features to help you keep track of and extend your range, including a Brake Coach feature that helps you track your braking efficiency. The Navigation System also features an EcoRoute option, which calculates the most efficient route to your destination.
  • Q.
What will cause my EV range to vary?
  • A.
Numerous factors have an effect on range: ambient temperature, traffic conditions, terrain, driving behavior, use of the vehicle’s climate control system, number and weight of passengers in the car and weight of cargo. Luckily, the Focus Electric comes standard with numerous features to help you maximize your range, including cabin preconditioning, which allows you to pre-heat or pre-cool the cabin while the vehicle is still plugged in to avoid drawing energy from the battery.
  • Q.
How do I ensure arrival at my desired destination? What happens if the battery runs out while I’m on the road?
  • A.
The Focus Electric is equipped with numerous features to help you keep track of and maximize your range. The MyFord® Mobile app and PC portal feature a trip planner that helps you determine whether your desired destination is within the vehicle’s available range. Inside the vehicle, the unique MyFord Touch® cluster screens display all of the information necessary to keep tabs on battery charge level, available range and distance to your destination. The Navigation System also features an EcoRoute option, which calculates the most efficient route to your destination.

Should the battery run out before reaching your destination, Roadside Assistance shall tow eligible Focus Electric vehicles to the nearest qualified Ford or Lincoln dealership or (at the customer’s request) to their home, if located within 35 miles of the disablement location. If the customer requests to be towed to a location more than 35 miles from the disablement location, the customer shall pay for any costs of mileage in excess of 35 miles.
  • Q.
What do I do if I want to go farther than 100 miles in one trip?
  • A.
Should you wish to drive farther than the vehicle’s maximum range in one trip, Ford is collaborating with MapQuest to provide information to help you locate charging stations along your route and plan your trip accordingly using the MyFord® Mobile App.
  • Q.
I sit in traffic on my commute. Does the battery drain when I am sitting still?
  • A.
The electric motor does not draw current while the vehicle is sitting still, however, other electrical systems in the vehicle will draw current if they are left on (radio, climate control, interior/exterior lighting).
  • Q.
How long does it take to charge?
  • A.
With the available Leviton 240V charging station, Focus Electric can fully charge in about 4 hours, about half the time of the current Nissan Leaf.
  • Q.
Will there be a standard power plug? I want the 240-volt charging system installed. Who can provide this? Can I install it myself?
  • A.
A 120V convenience charge cord that can be plugged in to any standard household electrical outlet comes standard on Focus Electric. For a much faster charging time (about 4 hours), Ford provides the option of purchasing the 240V Leviton home charging station through your Certified EV Dealer, installed via Best Buy Geek Squad.

Ford recommends that you purchase the Leviton 240-volt home charging system, which was specifically designed for your Focus Electric, through your Ford Certified EV dealer, who will set up an appointment with Best Buy Geek Squad for an installation appointment/site inspection. Once the inspection is complete, the Geek Squad agent will schedule a licensed master electrician to install your charging station.
  • Q.
Can I charge the Focus Electric anywhere?
  • A.
As long as there is an outlet available, yes. The Focus Electric comes standard with a 120V convenience charge cord that can be plugged into any standard household electrical outlet. There is also a growing infrastructure of public charging stations (which can be located using the MyFord® Mobile App) that allow you to charge on the go.
  • Q.
What is MPGe? Why is it on the label? How is it displayed? How is it calculated?
  • A.
MPGe stands for Miles Per Gallon equivalent, and is the EPA’s method for comparing the relative efficiency of all-electric and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles to conventional gas-powered vehicles. Instead of showing how far the vehicle can go on one gallon of gasoline, it represents the number of miles the vehicle can go using a quantity of fuel with the same energy content as a gallon of gasoline. The EPA’s formula equates one gallon of gasoline to 33.7 kilowatt-hours of electricity. Focus Electric will receive MPGe ratings for city, highway and combined driving.
  • Q.
When plugging the car in, will it be possible that the car is "smart” enough to pull electricity during non-peak hours? Is there a timer that allows you to set what time the charging starts and stops?
  • A.
The MyFord® Mobile App and web portal allow you to customize your charge schedule to take advantage of lower off-peak utility rates. Through a unique value-charging feature, powered by Microsoft, MyFord Mobile is able to keep track of when your local utility switches to the lower off-peak charging rates. You can schedule your Focus Electric to charge during these times when electricity prices are lowest.
  • Q.
What is the estimated price of the home-installed charging station components? Are they separate from the cost of the car?
  • A.
Based on current plans, the Leviton 240V home charging station with standard installation is expected to retail for approximately $1,499, as much as 30 percent less than comparable installations. The unit can be purchased along with your Focus Electric through your Ford Certified EV Dealer, who will set up an installation appointment through Best Buy Geek Squad.
  • Q.
Can you charge the battery even if it's not empty?
  • A.
Yes, you can charge the battery as often as you like in smaller increments. In fact, it’s a good idea to plug it in whenever you have the opportunity.
  • Q.
Is an upgrade to my home electrical system required to set up the charging station?
  • A.
It depends on the current state of your home’s electrical system. If you purchase the Leviton 240V home charging station, your Ford Certified EV Dealer will set up an installation appointment through Best Buy Geek Squad. During the appointment, a Geek Squad agent will conduct an electrical audit to assess your current electrical system and whether or not an upgrade is necessary.
  • Q.
Since the Focus Electric solely runs on electricity, would charging from home dramatically increase my electricity bill?
  • A.
Your electric bill will vary based on vehicle usage and your local electric rates.
Ford has teamed up with SunPower Corp. to offer customers a home rooftop solar panel system that can supply clean, renewable energy to help offset the electricity used to charge the vehicle.
  • Q.
Is there any additional equipment that I would need for the Focus Electric? Do I need a dedicated charging station?
  • A.
Focus Electric does not require a dedicated charging station. However, to significantly reduce charge times, Ford recommends purchasing the optional 240V Leviton home charging station, which allows full charging in about 4 hours.
  • Q.
How often do I have to plug it in?
  • A.
If you are driving your Focus Electric daily, you’ll want to plug it in every night. Using the MyFord Mobile App, you can set up a value-charging profile, allowing you to take advantage of lower off-peak utility rates. Note that you can plug in as often as you like.
  • Q.
What happens if the battery is not fully charged?
  • A.
The vehicle does not need to be fully charged before being driven; it will not degrade battery performance.
  • Q.
How much will it cost to charge Focus Electric at a charging station?
  • A.
Public charging station costs are determined by the charging site owner and can vary; however, many public stations provide free charging to attract customers to local businesses.
