The available 6.7L Power Stroke® V8 Turbo Diesel engine is equipped with a diesel particulate filter (DPF) that traps particulate matter, or soot, from the exhaust gases. The engine control computer is automatically programmed to periodically inject extra fuel (known as “regeneration”) to burn off the soot that accumulates in the DPF.
Some operating conditions, such as idling for long periods or pulling a light load, don’t generate enough heat and thus don’t allow for normal automatic regeneration to occur. That’s why the operator-commanded manual regen is optional on Super Duty® XL and XLT models.
When the light on the instrument panel comes on, indicating the approaching need for manual regeneration, the push of a button raises the exhaust temperature to a point where the soot is burned away. No need to have to drive on-road to get the engine temperature high enough for regeneration. After the burn-off is completed, the exhaust temperature reverts to its normal level.
